Help Save Rugiatu, A 60-Year Old Mother Fighting Liver Disease in Sierra Leone

My name is Fatmata. I am a pharmacy student and the advocate for Rugiattu Kargbo a 60-year-old mother and grandmother from Freetown, Sierra Leone who is fighting for her life. Rugiatu has been diagnosed with severe liver cirrhosis a condition where years of undetected illness has caused her liver to become heavily scarred and unable to function properly. What makes her situation critical right now is that this has led to multiple life-threatening complications happening simultaneously. The blood vessels inside her food pipe have become dangerously swollen confirmed by a specialist gastroenterologist through an endoscopy procedure. These swollen vessels have already caused internal bleeding, which is why she experienced black stools weeks ago. She has a life-saving procedure booked for September 7th 2026 to treat these vessels before they rupture completely — which could be fatal. Her abdomen has been severely distended with several litres of trapped fluid a direct consequence of her failing liver and high internal blood pressure. She is currently on medications to drain this fluid and is responding but these medications must continue. She is visibly thin and weak. Her protein levels are critically low because her damaged liver can no longer produce the proteins her body needs to survive. She needs nutritional support, regular blood monitoring, specialist consultations, and medications every single month for the rest of her life. She is already on antiviral medication to treat the underlying cause of her liver disease and is being monitored by specialist doctors here in Freetown including a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist. The medical care she is receiving is the right care. The doctors are doing everything correctly. But the financial burden is overwhelming for her family. The cost of her procedure, her monthly medications, her regular blood tests, her specialist consultations, and her nutritional needs is beyond what those who love her can cover alone.
